Recommended Skincare Products for Radiation Therapy Areas
Recommended Skincare Products for Radiation Therapy Areas
The skin in the area receiving radiation therapy may undergo changes. These effects usually improve after treatment ends, but how you care for the affected skin depends on the severity of the reaction. Skin reactions can vary from person to person depending on factors such as the treatment site, radiation dose, size of the treated area, other medical conditions, treatment methods, stress levels, infections, medications, and the presence of anemia. Below are some guidelines for managing skin in radiation-treated areas:
• Before your daily radiation session, make sure the skin in the treatment area is clean and free of any lotion or oil.
• If you have sensitive skin, use a mild, fragrance-free soap for daily washing.
• If you plan to use skincare products on the treatment area, apply them at least 4 hours before your radiation session (to allow the product to absorb fully).
• To avoid irritation, do not use razors on the treated skin; instead, use an electric shaver if needed.
• Avoid using perfumes, powders, cosmetics, or alcohol-based products on the treated skin.(Your doctor may recommend one or more of the non-prescription products listed below. Before using any other skincare products not mentioned here, consult your doctor or nurse first.)
